A little About us…

In the Beginning…….

Pine Road was originally conceived out of a passion for making things and in particular - out of wood, a simple as that really - what was essentially a hobby.

The name Pine Road didn’t even exist in the early days of 2012, that came much later, but the whole enterprise was inspired initially by a need for a little garden furniture for our newly constructed decking area at home and on searching around found a lack of garden furniture that had “character”.

It seemed that all that was on offer was the same humdrum mass produced, imported furniture that was available in all the mainstream DIY stores and so disappointed by this lack of choice decided to make our own and so Pine Road’s first creation was borne - a simple table and bench also at the time we also wanted something a little “Rustic” and what better way to do this than use recycled wood an ethos that is now the mainstay of the business.

This humble set caught the attention of family and friends who soon put forward their own requests for individual garden furniture an a few accessories - a side table and garden bench for one, an arbour for my mother-in-law, planters for a neighbour, the jobs just kept on coming and then came the suggestion “have you ever thought of doing this full time…?”

No, said I, as for over 10 years at this point I had enjoyed full time work with a large furniture retailer who had given me many opportunities with a team of colleagues who I looked forward to working with every day and so certainly not willing to give this up.

But given the popularity of rustic furniture for the home or the garden decided that it would be nice to give this enterprise a name at least and so I could make my hobby a little more official and so after a bit of a brainstorming session (too much wine involved as some suggestions although certainly quite amusing - wood gave us quite a bit of material (pun intended :-)) -  they were not quite appropriate!) my wife came up with the name Pine Road - genius!

….and so although there were a few shows attended (Frome Cheese Show is definitely one for your calendar…) and quite a few orders done in my spare time - Pine Road remained just a little side project bubbling away in the background ….. Then 2020 came along.

A year that started on a rather somber note as a family member who was not in the best of health, lost her fight and sadly passed away during the first lockdown, too young herself and leaving behind a very young family - it was, although expected, a shock to us all and made me reevaluate my life and what I expected from it.

During lockdown I had time on my hands and saw it as an opportunity to further develop Pine Road’s products, to add more rustic accessories and furniture to a growing portfolio, but this period also furthered my dismay at seeing so much quality wood being wasted and left to rot or chipped and burnt, not so much visible environmental impact as plastics sure, but still, with an ever growing reliance on importing wood felled from various countries around the globe from vastly diminishing resources whilst ignoring the vast resource on our own doorstep, recycling in any form is hugely important in this era we are in and so even though this was important to me personally, I was keener than ever to make sure all of my products were sustainable.

But after 21 years now employed by the same furniture retailer and the responsibilities I had at home and now at work, was I prepared to risk all and go for it…. then another family member fell ill after a massive stroke - this sealed the deal - it seems that what they say is right - life's too short not to sometimes take risks however challenging they may seem to be, sometimes you just need to - GO FOR IT!

So here we are - Pine Road now officially open for business!
